The Newt in Somerset


The Newt in Somerset has ancient woodland, historic gardens and far reaching views. It is a unique destination with Hotel, Spa, Restaurants and much more. Visitors can take a tour of the gardens, deer park and cyder press, dine in the Garden Café and visit our farm shop. Attracting around 150,000 visitors per year, The Newt in Somerset is a vibrant and thriving attraction, animated throughout the seasons by special events, workshops and education programmes.


Department Description


The woodland team are responsible for the care and maintenance of the tree collections across the estate. These include specimen trees and a range of different woodland eco systems. The team use a range of machinery and resources to maintain these areas and ensure the woodland habitat is managed to encourage and sustain wildlife.



Key Responsibilities


  • Maintain and develop the grounds across the estate, assisting with all aspects of support and maintenance for public display.
  • Assist the woodland team in any projects or events planned for the visitor attraction and the hotels grounds.
  • To be involved in visitor engagement that enhances their experience through representing the history, value, and vision of the Newt.
  • Machinery maintenance on a variety of equipment
  • Providing care and maintenance to trees across the estate
  • Carry out a wide variety of tasks to ensure the plant collection is looked after to a high standard
  • Ensure the woodland is managed to encourage biodiversity and that it is maintained for future generations
  • Ensuring that any flagged tree work from tree inspections and associated reports is carried out to a high standard
  • Following health and safety procedures whilst carrying out arboriculturally work across the estate
  • Carrying out wildlife surveys
  • Supporting the Head of Woodland and Lead Woodland Gardener to achieve the collective objectives of The Newt in Somerset


Skills and Experience

  • Experience driving tractors and using chippers and strimmer’s
  • All the relevant chainsaw and climbing certificates
  • Good knowledge of managing a diverse woodland
  • Practical experience, supported by appropriate qualification to level 3 or equivalent
  • Field Identification skills and a passion for nature
  • A thorough, precise, and well organised individual.
  • An eagerness to provide the highest level of visitor experience.
  • The candidate will be a hands-on, hard-working, energetic person with excellent team working skills and the ability to communicate across all levels and adapting their style to meet individual needs.
  • Be able to work safely, with risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures
  • Experience carrying out complexed tree surveys in a private or public garden
  • Full and clean UK driving license.
  • Basic machinery maintenance knowledge
