Assistant Farm Manager


Description

Who are we? 

Gibbet Hill Farm is a 1.5 acre, minimal-till diversified farm located in Groton, MA.  We farm a mix of vegetables, herbs, some perennial fruit, microgreens, edible and cut flowers, along with raising a small herd of lambs and pigs. This will be our fifth season using a minimal till system and organic practices. We are primarily dedicated to supplying produce to our chefs. Due to the abundant productivity of the farm we were able to add a CSA component just this last season.  

A full team consists of the farm manager, assistant manager and two field crew members. The small size gives a unique opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the farm: field preparation, compost development, seeding, planting, weeding, disease and pest prevention and treatment, harvesting, processing and deliveries.  The assistant manager will also be expected to collaborate with the manager to maintain and improve existing systems as well as develop new systems with a view to continually improving the excellence of the farm and its contribution to the restaurant group and CSA members. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Field work: planting, harvesting, irrigation, pest and disease control, weeding etc.
  • Greenhouse work: seeding and watering  .
  • Wash station work: washing, processing, packing and delivering produce
  • Farm maintenance: weekly tidying of the fields, cleaning and mending of farm structures, and washing of tools and equipment 
  • Leading the field crew in the absence of the manager
  • Collaboration with farm manager 
  • Restaurant deliveries 
  • Livestock chores 
  • Small construction projects
  • Occasionally instructing and working alongside individual volunteers
  • Acting as a liaison between the farm, chefs, CSA members and the general public
  • Representing the farm at the summer and fall Farm dinners

Qualifications:

  • At least two years of full season farm experience
  • Minimal/no-till experience preferable 
  • Previous management experience preferable
  • Tractor experience preferable
  • Livestock experience preferable 
  • Some carpentry experience preferable 
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. 
Benefits: 
  • Farm Staff is encouraged to harvest produce for personal use. 
  • Staff meal is served daily at our restaurant at 3 pm. 
  • Quarterly dining benefit to be used at one of our restaurant locations
  • Ability to apply for $200 stipend to offset the cost of agricultural education opportunities
  • 1 bedroom apartment offered on-site at rent well below market value
  • Health, Dental and 401k *must meet eligibility requirements
