Head of Wine – St Austell Brewery (Field Based)

We have an exciting opportunity to join the St. Austell Family Group as Head of Wine. 

This role will be the face of wine at St Austell Brewery, developing our portfolio so we are the envy of the drinks trade. They will inspire and share their extensive wine knowledge with both customers and employees, engaging at all levels to ensure we’re a supplier of choice.  

St Austell Family Group is a family-owned business with world class brewing and pubs at its heart. We began life in Cornwall over 170 years ago and have built a £200m business with internationally recognised beer brands in Tribute and Proper Job. We own two state-of-the-art West Country production sites, St Austell Brewery and Hare Brewery - home of Bath Ales, which we acquired in 2016. We own 180 pubs, 36 of which we manage ourselves, situated in some of the most iconic locations in the Southwest. Our ambition is growth, building a long-term progressive and profitable business, fit for future generations.

Our venues are exciting places to be. Dynamic, high-volume, and fast-paced, they are go-to destinations for high quality, locally sourced food and drink. Being set in desirable coastal and rural locations means they each experience significant seasonal demand over the summer.

What it’s like to be Head of Wine 

·         Working cross functionally, ensuring St Austell wines has an industry leading wine range with great quality wines across grape varieties and countries of origin, underpinned with strong commercial agreements

·         Continual analysis of wine ranges for varietal and country of origin gaps and striving to continually develop the offering to be best in class

·         Implement a principal led hierarchy across the wine range to ensure wine names/labels/varietals align to price point. Ensuring we have a logical and coherent range structure from SW exclusive entry wines to super premium options

·         Working with the Wine Portfolio Manager, increase our own brand wines and add to our range

·         Working with the Marketing Team and the Wine Portfolio Manager, responsible for a market leading, modern and commercially advantageous Wine Brochure

·         Be a close follower of wine trends and ensure St Austell Wines are at the forefront of innovation, seasonal and promotional opportunities

·         Working with the Commercial Director, ensure that there are plans in place to deliver identified financial, operational and people KPI’s to meet required targets

·         Delivering inspiring engagement events to suppliers, winemakers and customers to promote the range and demonstrate the standards and quality that we deliver

·         Work closely with the Free Trade sales team to manage key wine accounts including prospective and sensitive accounts

·         Build an exclusive VIP Club for select premium customers

·         Drive Sales Team educational agenda with the Training team, including training manuals, monthly wine modules, new wine information sheets and sales tool kits

·         Working with the Commercial Director, identify sales opportunities outside of the SW to leverage our purchase volumes

·         Align with our digital team to ensure appropriate social media presence and explore online marketing opportunities

·         To support future growth by having business strategies in place and shared across teams to ensure engagement

·         To be passionate about the role that we play in the marketplace to improve brand recognition, brand equity and work at all levels of the distribution chain including retail, distribution and consumer level

About You:

You’re understandably proud of what you’ve achieved with your solid track record of success in your career and proven negotiation skills.  Your experience has also seen you:

  • Long standing wine industry relationships
  • Can demonstrate tenacity and good commercial acumen
  • Ability to look at current business practice and identify efficiency and commercial improvements
  • Strong Analytical Skills
  • Excellent and Professional communication skills
  • Well organised and can work to deadlines
  • Great cross functional communication skills
  • Relevant qualifications achieved
  • A passion for the drinks and brewing industry
