Description

The Board of The Conduit is looking for an exceptional individual to lead our membership and community building team.

The Conduit exists to gather change-makers to solve real world challenges. We are building a collaborative community of people committed to creating a just, prosperous and sustainable future.

The Conduit Club London

Our members are social entrepreneurs, investors, creatives, business leaders, activists, civil-society leaders and policymakers, bringing together knowledge, networks and capital for sustained positive impact. Our members range from grassroots community social entrepreneurs to some of the nation’s most prominent philanthropists and impact investors.

We deliver over 200 solutions-focused talks, workshops, and experiences annually, based on our eight core impact themes. We offer in-person programming complemented by digital events and content, so that our community can participate from wherever they are in the world. Our speakers and contributors include Nobel prize winners, globally renowned innovators and investors, thought leaders and writers.

Reporting to our Executive Director, the Director of Membership and Community Building will sit at the heart of our mission to grow and deepen or community.

Our home at 6 Langley Street, Covent Garden

The Conduit’s new home is a landmark site in the heart of central London, located at 6 Langley Street, Covent Garden and we opened our doors on September 13th, 2021.  

Our grade II listed, six-floor building is owned by the Mercers’ Company, who share The Conduit’s vision and mission - to facilitate social, environmental, and economic change - and focus on being a force for good in the world. The building comprises:

  • An all-day dining, public-facing ground-floor restaurant called Warehouse showcasing the best in sustainable and ethical hospitality with a beautiful multi-functional private dining space.
  • A dedicated events floor for Conduit programming and private events, hosting up to 200 guests for drinks receptions, banquet dining options and theatre-style events.
  • The Reading Room, a multi-purpose member floor with a fully functioning bookshop with over 1,000 titles, carefully curated around The Conduit’s core themes, a podcast studio, salad bar, bookable rooms for meetings and private dining, and member lounge space.
  • The Ubuntu Bar – for members to host meetings, connect and collaborate over coffee during the day, and unwind over cocktails in the evening, with a dedicated curtained lounge area for the community to convene around The Conduit’s programming, form working groups and build momentum around key discussions/take action.
  • The Conduit Workspace, a co-working floor housing businesses aligned with our values.
  • The Rooftop, a member only restaurant and roof terrace with breath-taking views over London (80 covers inside and – from Summer 2022 - 120 covers outside)

Purpose & Scope

Leadership

You will create, grow, build and retain the most exciting and diverse community of change makers.

You will take responsibility and be accountable for hitting the targets set by the board for the acquisition of new members and the retention of existing members.

You will inspire the membership and community team to exceptional performance and ensure continuous innovation and challenger thinking.

You will ensure world class experience for all members from their first point of contact with us through to renewal.

Management of operations

You will lead the end-to-end, day-to-day delivery of the membership and community building functions of the business creating maximum return on resources available.  

You will take full P&L responsibility for the membership function.

You will ensure that all systems and processes relevant to the management of membership are fit for purpose.

You will lead on the devising of the in person and digital strategies necessary to attract high calibre members.

You will ensure that members are regularly and effectively communicated with and feedback listened to and acted upon.

Specifically, you will:

  • Design and implement a yearly membership and community building strategy including the budgeting of member growth and member retention in line with the company strategy
  • Achieve budgeted yearly membership acquisition and retention forecasts in line with membership category demographics

o   Analyse membership engagement to ensure data driven sales and retention strategies

o   Oversee membership nomination and selection process

o   Develop a pipeline of corporate targets for membership growth

o   Work closely with the Marketing Team to showcase members, and attract new members

  • Oversee and support the execution of community engagement activities, which increase the engagement and connectivity of the community including hosting

o   Evening drinks events

o   Ad hoc member meetings

o   Member committees

o   Orientations and inductions

  • Manage Impact Champion and Conduit Fellowship Strategies
  • Lead inclusion and diversity implementation for the Membership and Community Team, and the Reception Team
  • Design processes to capture, share and track the impact of The Conduit community
  • Take proactive and effective action regarding member misbehaviour and adherence to the cultural code
  • Manage the Team in line with budget, company and legislative guidelines

o   Ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the Membership and Community Building

o   Ensure coordination, collaboration and growth across all other in-house teams

Your knowledge and experience

You will have at least five years’ experience in a relevant senior leadership role where you have been responsible for building and sustaining an active and engaged community. This does not necessarily have to have been in hospitality. A previous holder of this role, for example, worked at the World Economic Forum before joining us where she was responsible for leading one of its global programmes.

You will have had full P&L accountability, understanding this at every level of detail in budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.

You will have demonstrated sharp commercial acumen, spotted opportunities and made connections with measurable results and you will be experienced in managing cashflow and growth plans successfully, in a similar sized business or profit centre.

You will have a successful track record in building and maintaining high performing and engaged teams and work environments where the people you lead are motivated and focused on the right opportunities and priorities.
