Overview of the Role

We are looking for an experienced Payroll Team Leader to join our proactive and successful People Team. Reporting to the Pay & Benefits Manager, you will play an important role in ensuring our 4,000 colleagues are paid correctly and timely for the amazing work they do.

This is a busy role as you will also work closely with the Pay and Benefits Manager, supporting our ongoing projects within the payroll team

Who we're looking for

You will already be a proficient Payroll Team Leader and comfortable leading a team of payrollers (specialist and administrators), in a high-volume, fast-moving environment.

You will be passionate about payroll and have strong administration and organisation skills. You will enjoy the challenge of rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in to help develop the department, team, systems and processes

Previous experience sought:

  • Experienced in large volume, end-to-end payroll of 3,000+ employees
  • Team leadership: Developing a team though objectives, coaching, check-ins and PDP
  • Expert in payroll software (We use iTrent. Experience of using iTrent would be amazing)
  • Sound working knowledge of PAYE and National Insurance statutory requirements, statutory leave and manual calculations
  • Experienced in dealing with HMRC, RTI (FPS, EPS etc.)
  • Up to date legislation knowledge (PENP, holiday pay, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Company Pension Schemes, including Auto-Enrolment pension schemes
  • Preferable knowledge of ROI payroll taxation, including PRSI, USC, LPT and BIK
  • Knowledge of IOM payroll desirable, but not essential.
  • P11d experience desirable
  • EOY experience
  • Reconciliation of payroll
  • Team player both with your own team and other stakeholders as necessary
  • Able to build/maintain relationships

'How' will you do it?

  • You will role model our Values and Behaviours as an ambassador for the People team
  • You will lead by example, be people centric, provide excellent service and have a pragmatic “Can Do” approach to your work

Finally, the bit about “The Works"

We are working towards our ambition of becoming one of the most loved retailers in the UK and the go-to place for reading, learning, creativity and play.

We believe in the importance of fun and fulfilment and taking time out to do the things you love.

With 525 stores nationwide and a strong multi-channel proposition, our mission is to offer a unique and enjoyable shopping experience, built on core principles of value, variety and quality.

We’re super proud to be certified as two star ‘Outstanding to work for’ via Best Companies for three years running and a Sunday Times 2020 Top 25 Best Big Companies to work for.
