City Winery strives to deliver the highest-end combined culinary and cultural experience to our customers who are passionate in sharing wine, music, and culinary arts. We are a unique facility, combining a fully functioning winery with intimate concerts, food & wine classes, private events in a variety of configurations, and fine dining. We have created a compelling mix for our sophisticated clientele of foodies, and active cultural patrons—bringing the wine country experience to the middle of a large city.


We are thrilled and fortunate to be able to resume business and provide a safe workplace for our employees. Position Summary

The VP of People at City Winery is a key leadership role that serves as a strategic business partner, champion of culture, and Human Resources expert to support a growing and unique organization. The role leads all functions within the scope of human resources including the people and talent strategy, payroll, HR processes and programs, and cultivating an unmatched employee culture. Success in this role requires a deep passion for people, building high performing teams and leading with empathetic hospitality. This role wisely maneuvers between being strategic and hands on; able to soundly move between serving as a strategic business partner and day to day operator with eyes on the fine details. 


Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience in a high-volume, fast paced HR/People leadership role in a hospitality setting 

  • Demonstrated success in developing creative solutions for business matters

  • Ability to see beyond traditional or classic HR when facing new challenges

  • Data driven and high EQ; able to balance financial analysis and data with cultural insight to make effective decisions for the organization

  • Exceptional people skills, sound judgement, instinctual nature, and high EQ

  • High integrity and people-first approach

  • Strategic and hands-on: able to comfortably shift between strategic business partner and day to day HR operator; willingness to ‘coach’ and simultaneously ‘roll up the sleeves’ to get things done

  • Expert in scaling and maintaining a thriving company culture 

  • Solid understanding and ability to apply labor laws and employment regulations for multi-states 

  • Prior experience utilizing HRIS software
    Able to deliver effective results, meet deadlines and targets

  • Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills including both written and verbal.

  • Aptitude to see the fine details, problem-solve, and regularly resolve conflict while maintaining composure

  • Able to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with all internal divisions

  • Must be organized and detail oriented and be effective in the use of time management.

  • Able to exercise effective judgment, sensitivity, creativity to changing needs and situations.

  • Proficient skill level of Microsoft Excel, Word

  • Able to work on a broad variety of projects and maneuver changing priorities.

  • Able and willing to work flexible schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays


Overview of Responsibilities

  • Oversee and actively participate in all activities across Human Resources, People and Culture, Payroll, Learning and Development,

  • Lead overall people and culture strategies for City Winery and drive high performance and accountability across teams 

  • Scale the soul of City Winery’s culture while authentically maintaining our DNA; design and deliver Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs

  • Develop and maintain strategies to recruit and retain the best talent  

  • Develop learning and development experiences, career advancement opportunities for employees at all levels 

  • Manage and implement effective and impactful performance management cycles to develop employees and achieve business goals 

  • Oversee, refine, and enforce consistent performance management practices; counsel and advise on employee disciplinary matters as needed 

  • Handle employee relations and legal matters; Oversee workplace investigations and make recommendations regarding employment actions; ensure all matters are handled in an equitable and consistent manner

  • Cultivate exceptional candidate and employee experience across entire lifecycle 

  • Enhance systems and processes to create efficiencies across HR systems and platforms

  • Manage and evaluate company-wide compensation strategy, wage scales, and lend insight into all compensation discussions for employees

  • Manage benefits planning and administration; ensure competitive and cost-effective benefits packages

  • Oversee workers compensation and administration

  • Develop and lead rewards and recognition programs

  • Enhance City Winery’s handbook, best practices and company culture documents.

  • Oversee and support payroll day to day activities

  • Ensure employment regulatory compliance with local, jurisdictional, state, federal, and other relates laws

  • Serve as advisor, counsel, and support system to management team

  • Keep up to date with latest employment regulations, employee trends, HR trends, and best practices to create a top tier workplace 

  • General personnel administration, maintenance, and follow up 

  • Perform HR management trainings as needed

  • Ensure company handbook is up to date and support regulatory compliance updates for multiple states.

  • Perform any and all other related functions, projects, initiatives as per business need.



This is a full time benefits-eligible position. We offer health insurance with Company contribution towards premium, generous paid time off policy, commuter benefits,  401K Retirement Plan, Volunteer Opportunities, Flexible Spending Accounts including pre-tax commuter benefits and parking, & more depending on position and other Company eligibility requirements.


Compensation Dependent upon experience, compensation ranges between $180,000-$220,000 annually.
