Role: Assistant General Manager — The Abbey Tavern, Kentish Town Road
Employment: Full-time

The Abbey Tavern is a popular Kentish Town pub known for its lively atmosphere, great food, beer garden and large roof terrace. We host regular events and private functions and offer a full drinks menu including cocktails.

Overview
As Assistant General Manager, you’ll support the General Manager to run a high-volume, event-led venue. You’ll lead shifts, coach and develop front-of-house teams, oversee cash & stock control, manage rotas and ensure excellent guest experiences across day-to-day trade and events.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead FOH shifts and take operational ownership in the GM’s absence
  • Coach, motivate and develop Duty Managers and bar/front-of-house teams
  • Manage rotas, recruitment, onboarding, training and performance
  • Oversee cashing up, till reconciliation and basic stock control
  • Drive commercial performance: upsell, promotions, labour optimisation and cost control
  • Ensure licensing, health & safety and food‑hygiene compliance
  • Own guest recovery and support event planning to boost trade

Person specification — essential

  • Proven supervisory/management experience in pubs, bars or event-led venues
  • Visible, front‑of‑house leader with excellent people skills
  • Commercially minded with basic P&L awareness (sales drivers, labour control)
  • Calm under pressure with strong decision-making and problem-solving
  • Passion for hospitality and events; available for evenings, weekends and event shifts
  • Right to work in the UK

Desirable

  • Experience in event/sports-led venues or managing outdoor spaces
  • Personal licence, Level 2 Food Safety or formal hospitality qualifications
  • Familiarity with EPOS systems and basic reporting
