 Job Overview

Director of Security will supervise Security staff colleagues responsible for guarding site premises of a complex property. On a routine basis, oversees security team performance to ensure security requirements are met. Sets policy for access control of the building. May be required to set parking regulations and manage reporting of fire and safety hazards. Reports atypical situations to senior level management. May coordinate the use of electronic surveillance equipment.

In this position, you will be responsible for managing Security Services operations including personnel, electronic systems, access controls, and guest services at the hotel and residence facilities. An ideal candidate will have strong emotional intelligence which compliments the Proper Hospitality Brand as it relates to a lifestyle luxury approach to our guests, residents, patrons, and colleagues.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and oversees implementation of comprehensive security systems and programs for the protection of guests, colleagues, and facilities at Austin Proper Hotel & Residences including budget and staff performance.
  • Coordinates with Executive Committee (General Manager, Human Resources, Finance, Food & Beverage) members during the planning and development of security programs that address the organizational security climate to ensure positive colleague relations.
  • Manages Security's Environment of Care responsibilities through participation on the Security Sub-committee.
  • Analyzes data and prepares reports as required by General Manager and committee members.
  • Advanced Emotional intelligence Practices, behaviors, and processes when exercising de-escalation measures with guests, transients, and colleagues.
  • Training and development experience is preferred related to verbal judo. 
  • Implement and executed measurable KPI as milestones for performance, evaluations, and training. 
  • Must attend conferences to learn industry best practices. Will be required to nurture and build stakeholder relationships with community leaders, as well as the law-enforcement community.
  • Oversees the control of access to buildings and monitors activities of visitors. Also, coordinates the monitoring of building operations and tours of properties.
  • Monitors building operations; investigates, reports, and maintains records of security related incidents occurring on property.
  • Arranges meetings between local fire department and tenants to advise tenants of local codes and fire procedures, etc.
  • Maintains ongoing communications with Property Manager, Building Operations Manager, and other building services related staff regarding site operations.
  • Develops and maintains operational budgets and prepares business case justifications for the growth or replacement of systems and/or personnel. 
  • Monitors and discusses personnel and financial performance monthly with the Director.
  • Provides leadership for emergency response at the property or site.
  • Maintains and updates security manual and emergency procedures.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of all current building, fire and life safety code requirements to align with local and national regulations.
  • Oversees security staff, assigns/monitors work assignments, and ensures training is provided in life safety system, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, and security operation center.
  • Works with human resources manager in handling issues related to security personnel. Acts as consultant to human resources on other security related issues
  • Ensures staff complete state registration requirements within 10 days of hire.
  • Conducts follow-up and documents status of card every 30 days until received.
  • Knowledge of security access control and surveillance systems operations and design.
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Experience in managing and directing a team of technicians and locksmiths to process work orders, small projects and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Able to set Security systems standards for the enterprise.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing and developing an Operations/Dispatch center
  • Able to work with multidisciplinary teams to drive results on projects and initiatives for the hotel.
  • Experience with managing vendors and vendor contracts
  • Experience in strategic planning for future security systems and projecting cost and ROI

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Required H.S. Diploma or GED with a preferred bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Law Enforcement, or related field or a preferred master's degree in business administration, healthcare, or related technical field
  • Required 6-10 years of management experience in law enforcement or commercial/proprietary security operations
  • Including 2 years management/leadership experience
  • Preferred 4 years of progressive leadership experience in a hotel property
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: 
    • Associate Protection Professional Certification
    • Physical Security Professional Certification
  • Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
    • Professional Certified Investigator
    • Certified Protection Professional Certification
  • Applicants must have extensive industry experiences related to de-escalation strategies
  • Must be able to work Morning, Evening, and Overnight shifts
  • Strong leadership abilities with the ability to motivate and manage a team effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, attendees, and other stakeholders
  • In-depth knowledge of security protocols, emergency response procedures, and the use of security equipment such as metal detectors and surveillance cameras
  • Ability to remain calm, composed, and professional in high-pressure situations, and effectively handle conflicts or challenging individuals.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Responsibilities include exterior posts / protocol
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work full-time hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on event schedules.
  • Background Check: Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screen to ensure the safety of our team and attendees.
