Description

Criterion Capital is looking for a motivated and ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their career in quantity surveying and gain hands-on experience across a diverse range of construction projects.

Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and the wider project team, you will support the commercial management of projects from procurement through to completion. You will gain valuable experience in cost control, estimating, procurement, subcontract management, valuations and commercial reporting, with ongoing support to develop your technical and professional skills.

We are committed to supporting career development and, where appropriate, helping you work towards a recognised professional qualification such as RICS or CIOB.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and administration of subcontractor and consultant orders.
  • Support the preparation of estimates, cost plans, tender documentation and pricing exercises.
  • Assist with the measurement and valuation of construction works using drawings, specifications and site information.
  • Monitor project costs, commitments, variations and financial performance.
  • Support subcontractor procurement, including issuing tender enquiries, analysing and comparing quotations, negotiating where appropriate and preparing recommendations and orders.
  • Assist with subcontractor and consultant account management throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Attend site visits and project meetings, working closely with site teams, subcontractors, consultants and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with valuations, payment applications, cost reporting and forecasting.
  • Maintain accurate commercial records and project documentation.
  • Assist Senior Quantity Surveyors and the Commercial Manager with regular reporting and commercial analysis.
  • Develop an understanding of contracts, commercial procedures and risk management.
  • Take responsibility for your own professional development and complete relevant training and qualifications.

Essential Requirements

  • A genuine interest in construction, quantity surveying and commercial management.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn, take responsibility and use initiative.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
  • A willingness to travel to project sites as required.
  • Full UK driving licence, where required for site travel.

Desirable Requirements

  • Currently studying towards, or recently completed, a relevant qualification such as an HNC/HND or BSc in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience within the construction industry or a commercial environment, including placements, internships or apprenticeships.
  • Some understanding of construction contracts, procurement or cost management.
  • An interest in pursuing a professional qualification with RICS, CIOB or another relevant professional body.
