Description

This was the first Honesty coffee shop, and where it all began. A pub with rooms and restaurant as well as a coffee shop and plenty of outside seating, set in a very picturesque setting. The Crown and Garter is open 7 days a week, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to our residents, locals and tourists.

Does your dream chef role look like this?

  • Full autonomy to design seasonal menus using local, fresh, and sustainable ingredients

  • Leading a small, ambitious and talented kitchen team

  • A beautifully restored 17th-century coaching inn nestled in the West Berkshire countryside

  • A 45-hour working week and minimal split shifts

  • Work alongside a driven and supportive General Manager

  • Back-office support from a central team including HR, marketing, and finance

  • A real chance to make your mark on a well-loved, destination pub-restaurant with 10 rooms

“One of the reasons I went into the hospitality industry was to create working conditions like these. If I was a chef this would be my dream job.”
Romilla Arber, Owner, Honesty Group

About the Crown & Garter

Located in the picturesque village of Inkpen, the Crown & Garter is a beautiful country inn with a loyal local following and an ever-growing reputation for great food and warm hospitality. With 10 boutique bedrooms, a cosy pub, a modern British restaurant, and its own on-site bakery, the Crown & Garter is a gem in the Honesty Group’s collection of community-focused venues.

We champion seasonality, sustainability, and simplicity — and we’re looking for a talented Head Chef to help us elevate our food offering and delight our guests.

Your Role

As Head Chef, you'll take ownership of all aspects of the kitchen. You'll lead from the front, developing a menu that reflects your creativity while staying true to our brand — fresh, flavoursome, and honest food. You'll manage, mentor, and inspire your team, ensuring a collaborative and high-performing kitchen environment.

Key Responsibilities Menu Creation & Kitchen Operation

  • Design and deliver seasonal, imaginative menus with the support of your team

  • Cook and plate consistently high-quality dishes

  • Champion local, ethical and sustainable sourcing

  • Ensure all kitchen operations run smoothly and efficiently

  • Maintain strong GP margins and minimise waste

  • Complete and review monthly stocktakes and wastage reports

  • Monitor supplier performance and secure best pricing on produce

  • Plan for menu changes throughout the year

People & Leadership

  • Inspire and lead a small, skilled team including a Sous Chef, CDP and Kitchen Porter

  • Drive a positive and professional team culture

  • Provide training, development and clear progression paths for all kitchen staff

  • Conduct staff reviews, monthly 1:1s and manage probation check-ins

  • Participate in recruitment, training, and retention of team members

  • Liaise regularly with the General Manager and the wider Honesty Group support teams

  • Work closely with marketing to promote menu launches, special events, and brand storytelling

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a passionate, experienced Head Chef or a strong Sous Chef ready to take the next step. You’ll bring creativity, commercial awareness, and a genuine love for hospitality and great food.

You’ll Have:

  • Proven experience as a Head Chef or strong Sous Chef in a similar setting

  • A passion for seasonal cooking and provenance

  • A collaborative leadership style and strong communication skills

  • A commitment to high food standards and kitchen hygiene

  • Experience managing kitchen budgets, GPs, and stock control

  • A calm and organised approach during busy service

  • An eagerness to innovate and share ideas

Why Join Us?

  • 45-hour contract with work-life balance built in

  • Competitive salary with regular reviews

  • Creative freedom and input into the future of our food offering

  • Support from an established, friendly and forward-thinking hospitality group

  • Staff discount across all Honesty Group locations

  • A beautiful working environment in a vibrant, growing business
