Welcome to Newcastle’s Newest Neighbourhood!
Freight Island is one of the most exciting, forward-thinking and disruptive food markets in the world. It’s a game changer and more importantly, it has soul.
Established in Manchester, Freight Island is bringing an exciting mix of culture, food, drinks and music to Newcastle. An island above the city, and blurring the lines between a food hall and a festival, Freight’s unique set up reflects the time, the demographic and the city. An urban oasis where guests can enjoy delicious food, great drinks and live entertainment.
It’s a place people can come for a coffee, stay for lunch, meet for drinks or make a whole day and night of it. We specialise in curating an evolving calendar of residencies and menus that span emerging local talent and nationally recognised names, keeping the experiences fresh and engaging. We care about the details. How things look. How they feel. How people move through the space, and what stays with them after they leave.
About the Role
We’re looking for a creative and digitally-minded Social Media Manager to join the Freight Island team - someone who thrives both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. You’ll be responsible for building and delivering engaging social campaigns while also becoming a visible part of our brand - capturing energy, storytelling through short-form content, and connecting with our audience in real-time.
You’ll lead the day-to-day delivery of our organic social content from Instagram stories that stop the scroll, to impactful campaigns that drive ticket and table bookings. You know how to connect brand storytelling with commercial goals, and you’re comfortable briefing designers.
From championing our kitchens to marketing festival-style events and weekenders, you’ll play a key role in ensuring Freight Island remains one of the UK’s most exciting destinations for food, drink and culture.
What You’ll Be Doing
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Social Media Management & Content Creation
Own and deliver our organic social strategy (primarily Instagram & TikTok)
Content & Campaign Strategy (60%)
Build and manage the monthly social content calendar for Freight Island
Collaborate with the wider marketing, design, and programming teams to align campaigns
Work with the Senior Marketing Manager to deliver joined up campaigns
Liaise with event promoters and partners for cross-promotional content
Support the development of brand tone, content pillars and voice
Launch dedicated TikTok strategy
Plan multi-channel content around events, food, drinks, and collaborations
Brief photographers & videographers for large event content capture
Develop creative campaign concepts and always-on storytelling moments
Schedule and publish daily content, adapting for platform nuances
Track content performance (engagement) and use insights to guide future strategy
Content Creation (20%)
Act as the in-house content host for social videos (IG Reels, TikTok, Stories)
Capture spontaneous content during events, kitchen takeovers, live shows, etc.
Interview guests, chefs, and performers in a brand-aligned tone
Collaborate with video editors or edit short-form video content yourself using apps or Adobe tools
Stay across cultural and social trends and jump on relevant moments in real-time
Community & Influencer Engagement (20%)
Respond to DMs, tags and comments as part of light-touch community management
Identify and brief influencers to drive brand awareness and UGC
Collaborate with event partners and kitchen traders to amplify their reach
Post brand-aligned updates on LinkedIn highlighting key milestones, and support B2B and recruitment objectives
What You’ll Bring
4+ years in a similar social media and content creator role
Passion for live events, food, drink and hospitality
A digital-first mindset and a creative approach to marketing
Experience managing social platforms
Strong copywriting, editing and content creation skills
Confident working cross-functionally with creatives, partners and agencies
A proactive attitude and ability to stay ahead of trends
What We’re Looking For
You’re culturally connected, quick on the pulse and passionate about telling stories. You’re equally strategic and creative - someone who brings ideas and insight to the table.
We want someone who’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment, who’s energised by live experiences and hospitality, and who’s ready to be part of a growing team. You thrive on organisation! You will be super, super organised, running social campaigns to pre-agreed deadlines, sometimes within tight turnaround times.
