Job Summary:
As a key role on payroll team, the Payroll Manager will be responsible for leading and executing the payroll function for our West Covina office. This is a hands-on manager role, managing payroll for three restaurant companies paying approximately 6,000 employees in the U.S. and Canada. The position will have direct supervision of a team of 4-5 Payroll Specialists and will report to the Payroll Director of Shared Services.
Responsibilities:
Manage and participate in the multi-state and Canada payroll and timekeeping processes including reviewing, validating and reconciling payroll data to ensure accurate payroll payments, reporting and records
Provide direct supervision, leadership and development to the West Covina payroll team
Ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions and updates including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions as well as new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates
Manage annual audits
Adhere to strict confidentiality standards
Act as a key participant in implementation of the new timekeeping system and help improve practices for the company
Partner with various groups within the business (ex. HR, IT and Accounting) to provide strategic direction on business needs and issues related to payroll
Ensure compliance with federal, state, local and Canadian tax and wage and hour laws, regulations or guidelines, including payroll tax registrations. Stay current on regulations, benefits changes, and labor laws impacting the payroll process, and stay compliant for all payroll tax jurisdictions
Prepare reports by compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, and nontaxable wages
Establish and maintain a culture of customer service
Effectively resolve escalations of various issues encountered by team or reported by employees
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Self-motivated, capable of seeking quality solutions and continuously focusing on process improvements
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Must have great math and Excel skills
Ability to manage and lead staff to first-rate performance
Demonstrated problem solving with an understanding of appropriate escalation points
Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive materials and maintain high level of integrity
Proven ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with client groups at differing levels
Ability to meet strict deadlines and prioritize
Understanding of payroll legislation and processes both in U.S. and Canada
Ability to problem solve and think outside of the box
Professional written and verbal communication as well as great interpersonal skills
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Provide direct supervision, leadership and development to the West Covina payroll team
Education and Experience:
5+ years of multi-state experience including management of team, processes, and systems
Relevant industry experience, restaurant or retail industry preferred
Experience in ADP Workforce Now required
Strong knowledge of federal and state law surrounding tax, garnishments, FMLA laws, new hires and terminations, benefits, etc.
Canada payroll experience preferred
Bachelors or Associates degree preferred
Certified Payroll Professional preferred
