Job Description – Assistant Controller

Reports to: Controller
POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Controller at KNEAD Hospitality + Design is responsible for supporting the Controller with the day-to-day management of accounting operations of our organization. The Assistant Controller will maintain detailed recordkeeping in all financial and administrative areas of our operations. The Assistant Controller works closely with the Controller, Chief Financial Officer, and executive leadership team to ensure we have accurate and timely information to execute our strategies for growth and profitability.
Responsibilities:
Produce and distribute daily, weekly, periodic, and ad hoc financial reports
Reconcile and analyze balance sheets for all entities: cash, intercompany, delivery service, gift card liability, and private event deposits
Weekly bank reconciliations
Improve team performance through coaching, praise, and redirection. Provide support in hiring, training, and developing a first-class restaurant accounting team.
Prepare annual budgets and maintain updated forecasts for each business unit
Execute periodic, quarterly, and yearly financial close for all entities
Actively participate in monthly Business Review calls with leadership, provide insights and research discrepancies
Work closely with managers to create best practices that improve profitability
Work with HR Manager to ensure weekly payroll, benefits, and tip pooling is accurately processed
Assist with bonus, commission, employee reimbursement, and benefits.
Support the Controller, CFO, and Principals in ensuring all financial decisions are made with regard for applicable laws, ethics, and regulations
Exercise discretion and care with sensitive information and maintain a strong control environment
Continually develop knowledge of our business and serve as the in-house expert on all accounting matters
Serve as a role model and mentor by setting a positive example in all aspects of business
Establish, communicate, monitor, and enforce policies and SOPs
Protect company assets by enforcing internal controls
Ensure all required business filings (tax, licenses, trade name, property tax, etc.) are submitted on time
Work with private, local, and governmental representatives on audits, including but not limited to: sales tax, workers’ compensation, and percentage rent audits
Stay current with changes in systems, processes, policies, and procedures as they relate to new accounting standards, regulatory changes, business strategy, and operational initiatives
Treasury responsibilities including positive pay, cash deposits, and change orders
Manage fixed assets, including additions, disposals, and depreciation
Oversee lease accounting
Requirements:
Deep understanding of: Revenue Recognition, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Inventory, and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)
Must pass a financial and criminal background check
Experience in a senior financial role, preferably in a multi-unit restaurant environment
Strong understanding of GAAP
Experience with Restaurant 365, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or comparable accounting system
Experience in designing and implementing accounting processes and controls
Self-starter who works independently, exercises sound judgment, and acts decisively
Ability to manage employees in a hybrid work environment (Monday–Wednesday in-office; Thursday–Friday remote)
Excellent collaboration and relationship-building skills
Attention to detail, organized with exceptional time-management and prioritization skills
Ability to communicate at all levels inside, and outside, the company
Compensation:
Salaried position $90,000 - $100,000 based on experience.
12 days of PTO in the first year of employment with six additional paid holidays. PTO increases based on years of service
