Description

Come and join the team at The Plough Inn!

We're on the lookout for a friendly, enthusiastic and reliable Front of House Supervisor to join our team at The Plough Inn, right in the heart of Oxford.

We're a busy, bustling pub on Cornmarket Street, welcoming everyone from our lovely regulars and Oxford locals to students, tourists and businesses. Whether it's a quiet midweek lunch, a packed Saturday afternoon or a private party upstairs, there's always something happening, and no two shifts are ever quite the same!

We're a close-knit team who work hard, have a laugh and take pride in what we do. We love good food, great drinks and, most importantly, making sure everyone who walks through our doors feels right at home.

Now we're looking for someone who shares that passion and is ready to take on a little more responsibility.

This isn't just about pulling pints and running food (although you'll definitely be doing both!). You'll be an important part of our management team, helping to run the pub day to day, looking after our people and making sure everything runs as it should.

If you're already a Front of House Supervisor, Bar Supervisor or Restaurant Supervisor, or you're an experienced hospitality professional looking to take your first proper step into management, we'd love to meet you.

What will you actually be doing?

A bit of everything, really! You'll be working closely with our management team, helping to keep the pub running smoothly and making sure both our guests and team are well looked after.

Running the pub

  • Taking charge of shifts, keeping service running smoothly and making sure everyone knows what they're doing.
  • Opening and closing the pub, including being a trusted keyholder.
  • Completing daily management duties, including cashing up, till reconciliations, safe checks and opening and closing paperwork.
  • Making decisions, solving problems and confidently taking responsibility when senior management aren't around.
  • Making sure we're following licensing requirements, company procedures and health and safety standards.
  • Keeping an eye on the little things that make a big difference, from a tidy bar to a well-organised service.

Looking after the team

  • Leading by example, whether you're behind the bar, looking after tables or helping out on a busy floor.
  • Supporting, motivating and helping train our front of house team.
  • Making sure everyone feels supported, knows what's expected of them and has what they need to do a great job.
  • Helping new starters settle in and build their confidence.
  • Creating a positive atmosphere where everyone works together and enjoys coming to work.
  • Being someone your colleagues can turn to when they need a hand.

Looking after our guests

  • Making everyone feel welcome, whether they're popping in for a quick pint or celebrating a special occasion.
  • Getting to know our regulars and helping us make new ones.
  • Managing table reservations, group bookings and private events.
  • Responding to customer enquiries, helping organise functions and making sure bookings run smoothly.
  • Handling feedback and the occasional complaint with a smile, a bit of patience and plenty of common sense.
  • Making sure we're consistently delivering the kind of service that makes people want to come back.

The behind-the-scenes bits

There's a lot more to running a pub than what happens on the floor, and you'll be getting involved in that side of things too.

You'll be helping with stock management, bookings, team administration, daily reporting and all those other little jobs that keep everything ticking along.

We use a variety of systems to help us do this, including:

  • DesignMyNight – Managing reservations, group bookings and events.
  • Access Stocklink – Stock control, ordering and deliveries.
  • Access People – Supporting team and personnel administration.
  • Workspace & ProNet – Operational tasks and company procedures.
  • Microsoft Outlook & Word – Emails, booking enquiries and general administration.
  • Canva – Helping with the occasional bit of signage, menu edits, event promotion or other creative projects.

Haven't used all of these before? Don't panic! We'll teach you what you need to know. As long as you're reasonably comfortable with computers, organised and willing to learn, you'll be absolutely fine.

Who are we looking for?

We're not looking for someone who knows absolutely everything. We're looking for someone with the right attitude, a bit of common sense and a genuine love for hospitality.

You'll probably be a great fit if you:

  • Have previous experience working in a busy pub, bar, restaurant or similar hospitality environment.
  • Have some experience supervising a team, or you're confident you're ready to take that next step.
  • Genuinely enjoy working with people and making guests feel welcome.
  • Can keep your cool when things get busy and think on your feet when things don't quite go to plan.
  • Are organised, dependable and comfortable taking responsibility.
  • Have a good eye for detail and take pride in doing things properly.
  • Are happy getting stuck in wherever you're needed. No job is beneath anyone here!
  • Can confidently communicate with guests, colleagues and management.
  • Are comfortable using computers and picking up new systems.
  • Can work a mixture of shifts, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Have a positive attitude, a good sense of humour and enjoy being part of a team.

Experience with opening and closing procedures, cash handling, bookings or other management duties would be brilliant, but it's not a dealbreaker if you haven't done everything before.

What matters most to us is finding someone we can trust, who takes pride in their work and genuinely cares about the people around them.

What We Offer Our Supervisors

We know that a great pub is only as good as the people who work in it, so we want to make sure our team feels valued, supported and rewarded for all their hard work.

As part of the Young's family, you'll enjoy some fantastic benefits, including:

  • Career development and progression – Access to our Career Pathway, apprenticeships and a range of training and development courses to help you take the next step in your hospitality career.
  • Free meals – Enjoy a meal on us while you're working.
  • Weekly pay – No waiting until the end of the month for payday!
  • 28 days' holiday per year – based on full-time entitlement.
  • Great staff discounts – Enjoy 20% off at all Young's pubs and 30% off overnight stays at our Pubs with Rooms.
  • Share Save Scheme – An opportunity to save towards shares in the company.
  • Company Pension Scheme – Helping you plan for the future.

And, of course, you'll be joining a friendly, hardworking team in one of Oxford's busiest city-centre pubs, with plenty of opportunities to learn new skills, take on more responsibility and progress your career.

Whether you're looking to become an Assistant Manager, Deputy Manager or eventually run your own pub, we'll help you work towards getting there.
