The Duke of Cornwall Hotel is one of Plymouth’s most iconic and historic hotels. Dating back to 1863, the hotel was created as the city’s first luxury hotel and still carries the character, grandeur and charm of its Victorian heritage today. With individually styled bedrooms, beautiful event spaces and a strong connection to Plymouth’s history, the Duke is a hotel with real personality. As the hotel prepares to reopen following improvement works, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of relaunching a much-loved Plymouth landmark.

We’re looking for a reliable and guest-focused Night Porter to join the team as we prepare to reopen. This is an important overnight role, helping to keep the hotel safe, secure and welcoming for guests. You’ll support late arrivals, complete regular safety checks, assist other departments and help prepare the hotel for the following day. We’re aiming for a start date in late August or early September, making this a great opportunity to join the team at the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Duke of Cornwall Hotel.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NIGHT PORTER AT OUR HOTEL

  • Welcome late-arriving guests, complete check-ins and support guest requests throughout the night.
  • Complete the night audit process accurately, ensuring guest accounts, payments, postings and daily reports are checked and balanced in line with hotel procedures.
  • Carry out regular safety and security checks across the hotel, including public areas, guest corridors, back-of-house areas and the hotel perimeter.
  • Help keep the hotel clean, safe and presentable overnight by checking public toilets, clearing trays and reporting any maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Support the Food & Beverage team by helping with room service, bar close-down, event spaces and preparation for the following day.
  • Set up meeting rooms and event spaces in line with the next day’s requirements, making sure everything is ready for guests and clients.
  • Prepare reception for the following day, including registration cards, vouchers, group arrival information and guest notes.
  • Support with breakfast set-up so the morning team are ready to deliver a smooth start to the day.
  • Complete handover notes and share important information with the day team to ensure clear communication across the hotel.
  • Remain calm, professional and guest-focused during the night, responding appropriately to any incidents, emergencies or guest concerns.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Previous experience in a hotel, hospitality, customer service or night role would be helpful, but full training can be provided.
  • A calm, responsible and reliable approach, with the confidence to work overnight and deal with guest requests professionally.
  • Good attention to detail, especially when completing the night audit, handling payments and preparing information for the day team.
  • A practical, hands-on attitude and willingness to support different areas of the hotel, including reception, food and beverage, public areas and meeting room set-up.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to complete clear handovers and share important information with the wider team.
