Petersham Nurseries Richmond are looking to recruit a Site Gardener for 2 to 3 days per week. 

Position Purpose                                                                                                                             

Onsite at Petersham Nurseries Richmond there is: an extensive working cutting garden; additional cut flower borders and planted borders together containers with seasonal planting, specimen trees, hedging and climbers, throughout the nurseries.  The nurseries lie adjacent to Petersham House garden: with extensive grounds belonging to the business owners which will also need maintaining. 

 Working alongside the Horticulture/Site Gardening Team, at the direction of the Head Gardener and the Director of Horticulture you will be required to have a broad knowledge of plants, plus relevant horticultural qualifications (preferably an RHS Level 2 Qualification or higher), to maintain and horticulturally care for all planting and displays onsite both locations.

This is a part time position.  As a business open to the public, your working hours may include early starts, late finishes and weekends. A rota will be provided in advance so that you can plan your time.

 Principal Accountabilities

 Ensuring that the exceptional plant displays, cutting garden, cut-flower borders, permanent borders, pergolas and glasshouse display plants, as well within the nurseries maintained to a high standard at all times.

  • Maintenance and upkeep of the plants in in both locations - including all the horticultural display elements and plants in the glasshouses, restaurants, borders, hedges, shops and outdoor areas. This includes weeding/ staking and supports/ pruning and training of wisteria, roses, specimens, fertilising and feeding/ dead heading/ bulb planting and lifting/ lawn care/dahlia planting and lifting/ mulching & watering.
  • Clearing & maintenance, cleaning, and preparing pots and planting areas
  • Planting up and maintaining all seasonal container displays, large pots, and troughs across both sites
  • Propagation for the cutting garden and other cut-flower areas
  • Permanent planters’ upkeep and maintenance of permanently planted trees roses and specimen plants.
  • Care and maintenance of climbers (including cleaning, pruning, tying in and support as necessary) within each of the greenhouses & courtyards - including pest and disease management with a regular spraying regime to be implemented and maintained, including use of biological controls.
  • Seasonal re-plants at Covent Garden
  • Any other reasonable horticultural duty asked of you.
