Training Restaurant General Manager
Reporting to: Director of Operations
The Training Restaurant General Manager (TGM) plays a pivotal role in cultivating operational excellence and leadership development across Smashburger restaurants. As a certified trainer, the TGM is responsible for onboarding, developing, and validating the skills of new Restaurant Managers and Shift Leaders, ensuring they meet Smashburger’s standards for performance, guest experience, and team leadership.
Core Responsibilities
Training & Development
· Lead the execution of Smashburger’s Manager Training Program for new shift leaders and managers, including the scheduling, delivery, and documentation.
· Facilitate structured onboarding and training for new team members, managers and shift leaders using the 4-step method (Tell, Show, Do, Review).
· Validate trainee performance through LMS assessments, skill demonstrations, and weekly feedback logs.
· Serve as a proctor for Food Safety and Alcohol Safety certifications.
· Submit all required training documentation to the Field Learning Manager (FLM) on time.
· Champion consistent execution of training programs across the market.
Operational Leadership
· Oversee daily restaurant operations, ensuring compliance with Smashburger standards and local regulations.
· Model SIZZLE guest service standards and coach others to do the same.
· Manage staffing levels, recruitment, and retention efforts in collaboration with the Director of Operations (DO).
· Conduct performance evaluations and talent reviews for restaurant teams.
· Partner with HRBP to address employee relations and disciplinary actions.
· Monitor and respond to guest feedback using Qualtrics within 72 hours.
· Ensure food safety and sanitation standards are upheld at all times.
Business & Financial Accountability
· Participate in P&L reviews and manage controllable costs, including labor, COGS, and operating expenses.
· Build schedules aligned with forecasted sales and labor targets.
· Drive local store marketing (LSM) initiatives and community engagement.
· Enforce cash handling policies to minimize loss and ensure accountability.
Culture & Team Engagement
· Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.
· Recognize and reward team achievements.
· Facilitate regular communication with restaurant teams and leadership.
Training GM Certification Criteria
· Minimum 1–2 years as a Smashburger Restaurant General Manager, with at least 90 days in current location.
· No performance management incidents in the past 6 months.
· Consistently achieve Steritech High Performer ratings in Food Safety; Medium Performer ratings in other categories. In the event a training restaurant fails to achieve these standards during a routine Steritech visit, a revisit audit will be scheduled within 30 days (max) of the initial audit.
· Achieve 85% or higher on Annual Training Readiness Visit by FLM.
· Attend all required GM and TGM training calls.
Following initial certification, the TGM must maintain certification through an annual recertification process; failure to meet the criteria listed above may result in a 90-day suspension. Failure to meet all criteria at the end of the suspension will result in de-certification and removal of the TGM's salary compensation.
If a TGM is relocated to a different restaurant, a 90-day transition period will be allowed to prepare for a re-certification visit from the FLM. During this period, the TGM will not train new managers or shift leaders.
Qualifications
· Fully staffed team according to Smashburger staffing standards (includes certified restaurant trainers).
· Completion of Smashburger Manager Training Program.
· Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Adequate coverage (80%) of working critical shifts in the business with trainees.
· Strong communication and leadership skills.
· Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in varying temperatures, and stand for long periods of time
· Proven ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and drive results.
· High attention to detail and consistency in execution.
