Position Overview:

The Spray Technician is a specialist member of the golf course greenkeeping team responsible for the safe, accurate and efficient application of plant protection products, liquid fertilisers, wetting agents, growth regulators, biostimulants and other approved turf-care products.

The Spray Technician will have primary responsibility for the preparation, calibration, operation, cleaning and maintenance of spraying equipment and will ensure that all applications are carried out to the required agronomic, environmental, health and safety standards.

The position also carries responsibility for maintaining accurate chemical and fertiliser records, conducting regular stock takes, monitoring product usage, maintaining application equipment and ensuring compliance with applicable Irish legislation and requirements.

The Spray Technician will oversee other appropriately trained and authorised members of the greenkeeping team who undertake spraying operations, ensuring that applications are carried out correctly and safely.

When spraying duties are not being undertaken, the Spray Technician will operate in a Greenkeeping Supervisor capacity, assisting the Golf Course Superintendent with the organisation and supervision of the greenkeeping team and the daily maintenance programme.

Key Responsibilities

The Spray Technician will be responsible for the accurate application of approved plant protection products across the golf course.

This will include applications to greens, tees, fairways, approaches, surrounds, roughs and other managed areas as required.

The technician will ensure that all products are applied at the correct rate, water volume and timing and in accordance with the current product label and applicable Irish requirements.

The technician will have a detailed understanding of the products being used, their intended purpose, application requirements, restrictions, environmental considerations and any applicable buffer zones.

The Spray Technician will work closely with the Course Manager/Head Greenkeeper to ensure applications form part of the overall turf-management programme and Integrated Pest Management strategy.

Responsibilities will include:

• Reviewing planned applications.

• Controlling stock levels & correct storage 

• Checking product availability.

• Checking application rates.

• Calculating the required quantity of product.

• Calculating the required water volume.

• Ensuring equipment is correctly calibrated.

• Communicating planned applications to relevant members of the greenkeeping team.

• Spray Records up to date - Turfkeeper & PPP Records 

• All PPE is in correct working order 

The Spray Technician will be responsible for the accurate calibration of granular fertiliser spreaders, including pedestrian and walk-behind spreaders.

The technician must be capable of calibrating equipment to an application rate expressed in grams per square metre (g/m²).

The technician will carry out physical calibration tests using the actual fertiliser being applied.

This will involve establishing a measured test area, setting the spreader, applying fertiliser at the intended walking speed, measuring the quantity applied, calculating the actual application rate and adjusting the spreader until the required rate is achieved.

The technician must understand that different fertiliser products can require different spreader settings due to differences in particle size, density, shape and flow characteristics.

Calibration settings will be recorded for individual products and rechecked when products or application conditions change.#

The Spray Technician will maintain an accurate inventory of all relevant plant protection products, fertilisers, wetting agents and other turf-care products.

The technician will record incoming stock, product usage and disposal.

Regular physical stock takes will be carried out and compared against stock records.

Any discrepancies will be investigated and reported to management.

The technician will monitor stock levels and advise management when products need to be ordered.

The technician will also monitor product dates and identify products that may require disposal or further management.

Chemical and fertiliser storage areas will be kept clean, secure and appropriately organised.

The Spray Technician will maintain accurate and up-to-date records relating to spraying and fertiliser applications.

Records will include, as applicable:

• Date of application.

• Area treated.

• Product used.

• Product authorisation/PU number.

• Application rate.

• Water volume.

• Quantity used.

• Application method.

• Relevant weather conditions.

• Reason for application.

• Professional User information.

• Sprayer calibration.

All records must be completed accurately and retained in accordance with applicable requirements and company/course procedures.

The Spray Technician will be responsible for the day-to-day condition of spraying and fertiliser application equipment.

The technician will inspect equipment regularly and identify faults, wear and damage.

Sprayers will be kept clean and maintained in good working order.

Nozzles, filters, hoses, pumps, valves, pressure gauges and other components will be checked regularly.

Any defective equipment will be reported and, where necessary, removed from service until repaired.

The technician will liaise with the appropriate machinery technician or maintenance provider where specialist repairs are required.

The Spray Technician will maintain high standards of health and safety at all times.

The technician will use appropriate PPE when handling and applying chemicals.

The technician will follow all chemical handling, storage, mixing, application and cleaning procedures.

The technician will ensure that spill-control equipment is available and maintained.

The technician will report accidents, near misses, spills, equipment failures and other incidents immediately.

The technician will ensure that members of the greenkeeping team working under their supervision follow appropriate health and safety procedures.

When spraying operations are not required, the Spray Technician will undertake general Greenkeeping Supervisor responsibilities.

The technician will assist the Golf Course Superintendent,/ Assistant Golf Course superintendent/Lead Greenkeper with the daily organisation of the greenkeeping team.

Responsibilities will include allocating work, briefing staff, monitoring progress, checking standards and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.

The technician will assist in implementing the daily and weekly maintenance programme.

The technician will monitor course conditions and report problems or maintenance requirements to management.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a qualified Greenkeeper, with proven experience informally leading or mentoring junior staff.

• Education: NVQ Level 3 in Sports Turf Management (or regional equivalent highly preferred).

• Certifications: Valid safe pesticide application certificates (e.g., PA1, PA2, and/or PA6 or regional equivalents).

• Licenses: Valid driver's license required to operate course utility vehicles.
