Job Details

Role: Sake Sommelier

Reporting to: General Manager and Beverage Director  

Assist guests with sake and wine selection, consider their taste and budget when guiding them through the menu. The Sake Sommelier must have a great personality and be able to communicate with members and guests that might share different levels of wine knowledge.

Primary Job Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Responsible for ordering, receiving, inventory, organizing, and selling wine and sake.
  • Work with culinary team to pair food with sake and wine.
  • Maintain sake and wine glassware program.
  • Oversee all sake and wine purchases and cost management.
  • Assist guests during the dinner service with sake or wine recommendations and selection for the perfect pairing with their dinner.
  • Regularly measure and evaluate beverage service levels and standards using guest and employee feedback and develop plans for continuous improvement.
  • Develop a training program for all team members to improve their knowledge of sake and wine tasting and service.
  • Train team members in order to maximize their understanding of sake and wine and proper service techniques including glassware, pour levels, storage, beverage pairings, and the ability to understand guest preferences.
  • Ensure that all sake and wine are served in proper glassware and in proper condition.
  • Maintain all beverage lists to be accurate, up to date, and free of errors.

Job Requirements

  • Court of Master Sommeliers Certified (Level 2) or equivalent in other accredited organizations
  • Sake Sommelier Class Certified from the Sake Sommelier Association (SSA) is a plus
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the role
  • Ability to speak and read Japanese is a plus.
  • Must be passionate about sake and wine, must possess superior people skills
  • The ability to determine sake and wine faults and maintain proper temperatures in order to showcase products at their maximum potential
  • A strong knowledge of food and beverage pairings
  • Solid understanding of pricing, budgets, and cost controls. Operation and programming knowledge of a point of sales system
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
