ABOUT THE COMPANY

Birley Bakery is the newest opening by the club owner and entrepreneur Robin Birley; owner of prestigious private members’ clubs 5 Hertford Street and Oswald’s in London.

Opening summer 2025, Birley Bakery will be located on the Upper East Side’s Madison Avenue, and aims to create a warm and welcoming environment, inspired by the classic concept of Boulangerie-Patisserie. We will fulfil the need of every household craving exceptional quality, by delivering simple yet elegantly crafted bread, pastries and desserts. 
 

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Barista at Birley Bakery NYC, you are a key part of the front-of-house team, responsible for crafting exceptional beverages, maintaining a high standard of service, and upholding the polished environment of the shop. You’ll work closely with pastry, kitchen, and service staff to ensure that the customer experience is thoughtful, consistent, and of the highest quality—from the first coffee poured to the last table wiped.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Coffee & Beverage Execution:

  • Dial in the espresso machine each morning to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Craft high-quality espresso drinks, teas, and other specialty beverages with precision.
  • Maintain ongoing excellence in beverage quality and efficient ticket times throughout service.
  • Provide knowledgeable recommendations based on guest preferences and dietary needs (e.g. decaf, milk alternatives, tea blends).

Guest Experience:

  • Offer warm, attentive, and personalized service to all guests.
  • Build rapport with regulars, remembering preferences and names to create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Upsell pastries, beverages, and retail items to enhance the customer experience and drive revenue.
  • Process orders and transactions through the POS system with accuracy, following all cash handling procedures.

Pastry & Product Coordination:

  • Receive and count daily pastry deliveries; verify quality and quantity.
  • Ensure all pastries are labeled with proper tags and displayed in line with visual standards.
  • Monitor freshness throughout the day and communicate sell-through or waste to management.

Opening & Closing Responsibilities:

  • Complete all side work, including setting up and breaking down the barista station, stocking items, and preparing the space for service.
  • Follow and uphold all daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning routines.
  • Log waste and ensure the shop is clean, secure, and ready for the next day.

Cleanliness & Organization:

  • Keep the barista station and front-of-house areas clean, organized, and fully stocked throughout the shift.
  • Maintain full knowledge of product inventory, station needs, and backup supplies.
  • Adhere strictly to all Department of Health and Safety standards related to food handling and hygiene.

Team Collaboration:

  • Support all front-of-house team members in delivering smooth and exceptional service.
  • Maintain open communication with breakfast (2nd floor) and pastry teams regarding product availability and guest feedback.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follow all posted schedules and complete additional tasks as assigned by management.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)

  • 1+ year barista experience preferred, specialty coffee or high-volume café experience a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of espresso equipment and dialing in.
  • Excellent attention to detail, communication, and multitasking skills.
  • Friendly, guest-focused, and team-oriented.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 lbs.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to be flexible with job demands and open-minded when being asked to complete tasks.
  • Ability to operate and use all the equipment necessary to run the bakery.
  • Ability to operate with grace under pressure.
  • Ability to move or handle equipment throughout the restaurant generally weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work varied hours/days (early mornings, weekends, holidays) as business dictates.
  • Ability to stand for up to 8-10 hours a day.
