ABOUT THE COMPANY

Birley Bakery is the newest opening by the club owner and entrepreneur Robin Birley; owner of prestigious private members’ clubs 5 Hertford Street and Oswald’s in London.

Opening summer 2025, Birley Bakery will be located on the Upper East Side’s Madison Avenue, and aims to create a warm and welcoming environment, inspired by the classic concept of Boulangerie-Patisserie. We will fulfil the need of every household craving exceptional quality, by delivering simple yet elegantly crafted bread, pastries and desserts. 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Head Barista at Birley Bakery plays a key leadership role within the front-of-house team. This position is responsible for maintaining the highest standards in coffee preparation, overseeing barista training, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations of the coffee station. Working closely with the kitchen, pastry chefs, and servers, the Head Barista ensures every drink reflects the quality and service expected at Birley Bakery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Team Support

    • Oversee daily barista operations and act as the lead during peak hours.
    • Train and mentor baristas to maintain consistency and excellence in coffee and tea beverage preparation.
    • Uphold and model Birley Bakery standards in hospitality, service, and cleanliness.
    • Provide feedback and support to team members to foster a positive and collaborative environment.

Quality & Execution

    • Dial in espresso daily and ensure coffee profiles are maintained throughout the day.
    • Maintain complete knowledge of Birley Bakery’s policies, procedures, and menu offerings.
    • Ensure consistent drink quality, presentation, and timely service.
    • Monitor milk, espresso, matcha, and syrup stations for cleanliness, stock, and organization.

Inventory & Maintenance

    • Maintain inventory levels of coffee, tea, and beverage-related items.
    • Coordinate weekly or bi-weekly orders with management.
    • Ensure all brewing and espresso equipment is cleaned and maintained regularly.
    • Communicate any maintenance needs or technical issues to management promptly.

Customer Service

    • Build rapport with regular guests and members, remembering preferences and ensuring a personalized experience.
    • Support servers with espresso-based drink orders from the second floor when needed.
    • Assist with floor coverage as necessary, including FOH tasks and POS transactions.

Operational Excellence

    • Ensure accurate completion of opening and closing responsibilities for the coffee station.
    • Uphold NYC DOH standards and internal hygiene practices at all times.
    • Support in the execution of menu updates, seasonal drinks, and new product rollouts.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)

  • 2+ years barista experience in a specialty coffee or high-volume café setting.
  • Previous leadership or training experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of espresso extraction, milk steaming, and drink standards.
  • Ability to multitask, stay organized, and lead by example in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • NYC DOH Food Handler's Certificate (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Excellent attention to detail, communication, and multitasking skills.
  • Friendly, guest-focused, and team-oriented.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 lbs.

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to be flexible with job demands and open-minded when being asked to complete tasks.
  • Ability to operate and use all the equipment necessary to run the bakery.
  • Ability to operate with grace under pressure.
  • Ability to move or handle equipment throughout the restaurant generally weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work varied hours/days (early mornings, weekends, holidays) as business dictates.
  • Ability to stand for up to 8-10 hours a day.
