Sous Chef

Greetings to our new potential Sous chef and welcome to your job application at The Depot – A Young’s & Co venue

We are looking for a Sous Chef with a positive attitude to join and lead our kitchen side by side with our Head Chef. We are moving the business towards a more vibrant concept accompanied of what we call “socializing menu” mildly inspired by street food.

If you have the passion for the cooking art, love creating new dishes, working with fresh ingredients locally sourced, this is your place to be.

We are fresh, British and seasonal.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Head Chef:

Supporting the head chef in all aspects of kitchen management, including menu development, recipe creation, and daily operations. 

  • Kitchen Operations:

Overseeing food preparation, cooking, and presentation, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to established standards. 

  • Supervision & Training:

Mentoring and training junior chefs, overseeing kitchen staff, and ensuring proper execution of tasks. 

  • Inventory & Stock Control:

Managing food orders, stock levels, and storage to minimize waste and maintain adequate supplies. 

  • Health & Safety:

Enforcing strict hygiene and safety protocols, ensuring a clean and safe kitchen environment. 

  • Menu Planning & Cost Management:

Assisting with menu creation, sourcing ingredients, and managing food costs within budget. 

  • Problem Solving:

Addressing issues related to food quality, staff performance, or equipment malfunctions. 

Specific Tasks:

  • Cooking and Preparing Dishes:

Executing a wide range of dishes, demonstrating advanced cooking techniques, and maintaining high culinary standards. 

  • Ensuring Food Quality:

Monitoring food preparation, presentation, and taste, ensuring every dish meets the establishment's standards. 

  • Maintaining a Clean and Organized Kitchen:

Ensuring all areas of the kitchen are clean, organized, and compliant with health and safety regulations. 

  • Managing Kitchen Staff:

Delegating tasks, providing guidance, and motivating kitchen staff to perform at their best. 

  • Training New Staff:

Onboarding and training new kitchen staff, ensuring they understand procedures and expectations. 

  • Ordering and Receiving Supplies:

Managing inventory, placing orders for fresh ingredients and supplies, and ensuring proper storage. 

  • Managing Equipment:

Ensuring all kitchen equipment is properly maintained and functioning correctly, reporting any issues to the appropriate personnel. 

  • Strong Communication Skills:

Effectively communicating with the head chef, kitchen staff, and potentially front-of-house staff. 

  • Adaptability and Flexibility:

Being able to adapt to changing situations, menus, and customer demands. 

  • Leadership Skills:

Motivating and guiding kitchen staff, resolving conflicts, and fostering a positive work environment. 

  • Passion for Food:

Demonstrating a genuine love for cooking and a commitment to creating exceptional dishes.

What we look for in a Sous Chef:

We are looking for an existing Sous Chef or Senior CDP looking for their next step, who considers themselves as a natural leader with a passion and flare for producing quality fresh food in an environment that makes people feel welcome. As the successful Sous Chef you will:

  • Have experience championing excellent service through quality food
  • Demonstrate a passion for leading and developing a team
  • Be an active hands-on Chef with excellent communication skills
  • Be responsible and able to manage the kitchen staff rota, training and all health and safety effectively at all times
  • Working alongside your Head Chef, you will be able to demonstrate your creativity and ability by helping to design and deliver new dishes for our menus and daily specials
  • Demonstrate great planning and organisational skills, necessary to maintain effective controls with regard to both GP and labour
  • Have a pro-active approach to driving sales and delivering growth, through engagement with both kitchen and front of house teams
