Sous Chef

We’re looking for a Sous Chef for the Old Bicycle shop in Cambridge!

Join one of Cambridge's most unique restaurants

Are you an experienced Sous Chef or an ambitious Senior Chef de Partie ready for your next challenge?

The Old Bicycle Shop is one of Cambridge's best-loved restaurants, serving fresh, seasonal food from brunch through to dinner, alongside an extensive cocktail and drinks menu. Originally the UK's first bicycle shop, we've transformed the building into a vibrant dining destination where great food, exceptional hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere come together.

As part of the Young's family, you'll join a business that invests in its people, promotes from within and offers genuine opportunities to build a long-term career in hospitality.

About the role

As Sous Chef, you'll work closely with the Head Chef to deliver consistently high-quality food while helping to lead and inspire the kitchen team. You'll play a key role in maintaining excellent food standards, supporting service, developing new menu ideas and ensuring the kitchen operates safely and efficiently.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a chef who enjoys working with fresh ingredients, leading by example and being part of a busy, professional kitchen.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the Head Chef in the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality fresh food during busy service periods.
  • Lead, motivate and develop junior chefs.
  • Assist with menu development, daily specials and seasonal dishes.
  • Maintain excellent food hygiene and health and safety standards.
  • Help manage stock, ordering, food costs and labour controls.
  • Work closely with the front-of-house team to deliver an outstanding guest experience.
  • Ensure consistency, quality and presentation across every dish.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is passionate about cooking, enjoys working with fresh produce and takes pride in developing both dishes and people.

You'll ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Sous Chef or Senior Chef de Partie.
  • Experience working in a busy fresh food restaurant or gastro pub.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities.
  • Knowledge of food safety, kitchen compliance and health and safety standards.
  • A positive attitude and a genuine passion for hospitality.
  • The ability to remain calm and organised during busy services.

What you'll receive

We believe in rewarding great people with great opportunities.

Our benefits include:

  • Clear opportunities for career progression within Young's.
  • Access to our Sous Chef to Head Chef Development Programme.
  • Apprenticeship opportunities leading to nationally recognised qualifications.
  • Regular culinary masterclasses and professional development.
  • Free meals while on shift.
  • 20% discount across all Young's pubs and hotels.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Share Save Scheme.
  • 28 days' annual leave.
  • Supportive team culture with ongoing training and development.

Why join us?

At The Old Bicycle Shop, you'll be part of a passionate team that values quality, creativity and genuine hospitality. Whether you're looking to progress your career or develop your culinary skills, we'll give you the support and opportunities to succeed.

If you're ready to take the next step in your chef career, we'd love to hear from you.
