SUMMARY
Perform all functions related to the daily operations management of
the Estate Gardens and Grounds. Maintain responsibility for all aspects of
proper horticultural care, maintenance of plant material and lawn areas
throughout the property. Maintain 5-star
standards of excellence through all phases of the work day including but not limited to; such tasks as soil
preparation, planting, transplanting, staking, pruning, mulching, weeding,
watering, fertilizing, IPM, snow removal, etc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for all aspects of proper horticultural
care and maintenance of plant material and lawn areas throughout the
property.
- Inspect and identify pest problems and coordinate
treatment with Estate Gardener following best practices for IPM.
- Prune plants in the Garden as directed by the Estate
Gardener (except trees over 15 feet in height).
- Manage horticultural applications (fertilizers,
fungicides, pesticides, etc.) as directed.
Maintain proper record keeping of maintenance activities, including specifics of all chemical & fertilization controls applied in compliance with Federal and State regulations.
- Consult with Estate Gardener as to plant removal/addition
issues, material and equipment needs necessary to perform daily tasks.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and small
equipment including making necessary operating adjustments and reporting need
for repair and replacement.
- Operate large equipment, such as mower, string trimmer,
and sprayer, as needed.
- Excellent
interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse
audiences.
- Assist with setup for events and programs.
- Assist in overall operational procedures.
- Perform other duties or special projects as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Candidate to have a minimum of 1 years of prior full
time experience in estate/fine garden management, commercial landscape
maintenance, high end residential landscape maintenance or design/build, resort
landscape maintenance, or other similar landscape focused discipline that
provides practical field experience relating to a large, detail oriented,
horticulturally diverse property or properties.
- Ability to operate equipment associated with maintenance of Gardens
- Shall hold, or shall acquire within 90 days of
employment, an active Commercial Pesticide Applicators License or Registered
Technician Certification, and have experience with basic horticultural chemical
applications & best practices.
- Shall hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License, and
shall have reliable transportation.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both written and oral skills
- Work without direct supervision in terms of assessing priorities & accomplishing tasks.
- Be available for
weekend work, overtime, and winter storm services as required
Desirable
- Bachelor’s
Degree, Associates Degree, or professional certification(s) in Horticulture or
another related field
- A
combination of education and commensurate field experience preferred.
- Be
familiar and comfortable with the operation and maintenance of standard
landscape small engine equipment (line trimmer, motorized shears, blower, chain
saw, etc.)
- Be
familiar and comfortable with the operation and maintenance of standard
commercial mowing equipment.
- Have
a functional knowledge of basic budget management.
- Have experience in holiday décor or other
seasonal display installation and management.
SKILLS
- Possess
the ability to communicate effectively with both written and verbally
- Ability
to maintain flexibility and complete task given as priorities change, dictated by the daily needs of The Inn.
- Be familiar and comfortable with basic landscape
hand tools.
- Be familiar and comfortable with the operation of
light trucks.
- Well versed in complex pruning techniques of trees,
shrubs, perennials, and annuals.
- Have a functional knowledge of and the ability to
diagnose basic plant health problems, including diseases and pest infestations.
- Have a high level of
plant identification skills and practical horticultural knowledge.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & Work Hours
- Shall have the ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.
without risk of bodily injury.
- Shall be able to
perform the physical workload required of a landscape-oriented job, to include
extended periods of walking and working outside in extreme weather conditions
if necessary, without problem
- This position will normally work 40 hours weekly,
sometimes the schedule may vary to ensure coverage
- Occasionally, you may be scheduled to work additional time to support the Inn’s
operations including special events, weddings, meetings, etc.
